Meet the Team

Dave Freeman
In the Winter of 2001 Dave completed a 6 week, 225 mile, solo toboggan trek along the Minnesota/Ontario border. Dubbed the Border Country Adventure, Dave used a laptop computer and Globalstar Satellite phone to post journals, photos, and other educational resources to connect with classrooms across the country during his first learning adventure. During the last five years he has played a vital role in the development and implementation of eight online learning adventures through the Wilderness Classroom.

When not planning WCO expeditions, Dave spends his time crafting photos and writing for newspapers, books, and on-line publications, as well as guiding sea kayaking, canoeing, and dogsledding trips. Dave has worked for Sawbill Canoe Outfitters since 1995, Superior Coastal Sports since 2001, and Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge since 1999.

Amy Voytilla
Amy has been a sea kayak guide and instructor at Superior Coastal Sports in Grand Marais, MN for the last three years. All summer long Amy paddles almost every day for work, and is often found on the water on her days off as well. She has taken to kayaking like a fish in water, and her smooth, rhythmic paddling style is a pleasure to watch. In the rest of the year Amy paddles out of the Lincoln Park Boat Club in Chicago where she has been known to use her kayak as an ice-breaker in hopes of getting one last paddle in before the years end!

She developed a love of Lake Superior and the BWCAW during many paddling, hiking, and cross-country skiing trips with her family throughout her childhood. When she is not paddling she is making art and using art as a means of connecting to others. A graduate of Macalester College in Studio Art and Psychology, Amy recently earned her Masters Degree in Art Therapy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is eager to return home to Minnesota and to the shores of Lake Superior, where she is happiest out on the big lake.

After three days of 30 to 45 mile per hour winds, the gale started to wane. We were tired of sitting in our tent, so we decided to muscle our way into a stiff headwind rather than spend another night...
